A lesson from a dear friend

'Young organisms -- human young especially, perhaps -- are relatively defenseless in the face of serious trauma, and its (negative) effects may prove both permanent and profound. Young monkeys raised in situations of gross maternal deprivation are permanently "traumatized" -- unable to regroup their adaptive resources, even when a more benign environment is (later) restored. Conversely, a major failure or rejection in the realm of romantic love may leave even a fully adult human permanently "injured".
